Laoshan is the highest coastal mountain in China, rising straight out of the sea just east of the city — granite peaks, Taoist temples, and spring water the breweries still prize.
Take the first bus, or stay overnight at the foot of the mountain, and start the climb while it is still dark.
The reward is a sunrise over the Yellow Sea from a temple courtyard that has watched the same view for a thousand years.
